a Summary, etc Lebanon is mostly regarded as the ‘miniature’ country of the Middle East due to its sectarian groups and sui generis political structure. In order to examine the processes of state and nation formation in Lebanon which have been constructed on a distinct power-sharing system and source of legitimacy; it is central to analyze the sectarian cleavage in the country as well as the regional and global policies and alliances of these sectarian groups. Since the Ottoman times various political systems had developed to rule Lebanon on the basis of its demographic structure and sectarian groups. Partly due to the Palestinian problem in the Middle East, the division among the sectarian groups had culminated in a long and devastating civil war between 1975 and 1989. The sectarian cleavage has then precipitated in the aftermath of the assassination of Rafiq al-Hariri (who was the former prime-minister) which led to the emergence of two camps in Lebanon; i.e. 8th March and 14th March groups. Since then the political landscape in Lebanon has been shaped on the basis of these two camps and turned into an intra-state power struggle with the adherence and influence of internal and regional actors. In this respect, the sectarian character of the uprisings in Syria following the Arab Spring resurfaced the very question of the future of the fragile pluralist power-sharing mechanism in Lebanon.
